There’s a comical depression moving east out of Hollywood that began hitting area theaters last Friday. Audiences can expect occasional mild chuckles, frequent yawns (gusting at times to full boredom), and accumulation of 1 to 2 hours of totally sucks.
The Weather Man is about a guy (Nicholas Cage) who wants to do the right thing, but can’t because he’s just not like that. His marriage is a disaster, his teenage son is drying out from drugs and befriends a pedophile, his 12 year old daughter is overweight and a social outcast, his father (Michael Cane) is dying, and oh yes…his job as a weather man is anything but fulfilling. This movie is staged in the perfect place to set the tone of this movie…winter in Chicago . It’s cold and monotonous. Over and over again, he attempts to deal with his children, convince his wife to try again, please his father and get the perfect job. You really want to root for the guy the few times he tries to take a stand and set things straight, but he disappoints you and never quite gets what he’s aiming for.
The Weather Man is the detailed depiction of a typical story. While it briefly touches on several major events in the life of the main character, its primary focus seems to be the most trivial aspects of everyday life. In fact, any actual remnants of a profound theme or interesting storyline are relayed only through annoying and seemingly endless narration. The pace is too slow, the characters too trite, and the dialog much too deliberate. There are a few funny episodes, but far too few to make this film worthwhile.
